A Refined Approach to Modernizing Kitchen & Powder Room Design

PROJECT: Kitsilano Renovation

In one of Vancouver’s most sought-after neighbourhoods, this Kitsilano home was ready for a thoughtful update—one that would honour its existing character while introducing a more functional, elevated way of living. The goal was not to start over, but to refine: integrating what worked, improving what didn’t, and creating a cohesive design that feels both modern and enduring.

The kitchen transformation began with a key constraint—and opportunity—the existing oak flooring. Rather than replace it, we used it as a foundation for the new design, pairing it with a carefully balanced mix of modern white cabinetry and soft, milky oak millwork. This layered material palette bridges old and new, resulting in a warm, contemporary aesthetic that feels intentional and timeless.

Functionality was equally prioritized. Every element of the kitchen was reimagined to support daily living, with tailored storage solutions ensuring that each item has its place. Upgraded appliances enhance performance, while a thoughtfully integrated wine fridge—positioned to face the living room—transforms an underutilized corner into a subtle yet sophisticated feature for entertaining.

The powder room presented a more complex design challenge: how to create a highly functional, design-forward space within a tight footprint.

Through strategic planning and collaboration, we introduced a discreet structural solution—a small metal post—that allowed for the removal of load-bearing walls and unlocked new layout possibilities.

From there, every inch was optimized. Slim 1.5-inch millwork walls maximize usable space without compromising structure, while a wall-hung toilet and compact prefab vanity contribute to a clean, streamlined look. An LED-lit mirror enhances both function and ambiance, and a tall, narrow storage cabinet ensures practicality is never sacrificed for design.

Even transitional spaces were considered. At the top of the stairs, a bi-fold door now conceals an unfinished crawl space—maintaining visual continuity while discreetly integrating necessary storage.

This renovation is a study in balance: preserving the warmth of the original home while introducing refined, contemporary updates that elevate both form and function. The result is a cohesive main floor that feels effortless, highly functional, and distinctly tailored to modern living in Kitsilano.
